Is there some way to quantify that evolution?

I don't know -- I'll throw this to the list wind.

Yes, using mainstream J2EE products takes a considerable amount of time over using WebObjects. But the idea is to maximize your service hours. As long as the customer doesn't know about products like WebObjects, solution providers are perfectly happy selling the more expensive solutions.

Of course, it would also help if Apple put together a solutions or
consultant page on their site. You know,
You can buy a shopping cart system from here, here, here...
You can buy content management systems from here, here, here,

Not gonna happen -- Apple wants to plug Apple Professional Services, not
off-the-shelf roll-your-own solutions.

Apple would be well served to establish a healthy eco-system for their enterprise efforts, this includes both APS and third party solution providers. IBM does this, its big fish customers are the domain of IBM Global Services (IGS), with the small frys going to IBM Business Partners. IBM has several programs to aid the business partners. There isn't much competition between Business Partners and IGS since IGS only takes on large accounts that are healthy businesses. They leave the smaller risky customers to business partners.

At this stage of the game, Apple simply needs to get in the game anyway they can and I think they know this. If you follow the happenings of the Apple Consultant's Network, it looks like there is an interest in growing the program dramatically over the next couple of years. I take this as a plus.
