local host request causes error when not connected to internet

I am developing PHP pages with MySQL on my iBook
When I access my locally hosted files and am connected to the internet
- no problem.
When I am out of my AirPort zone on the road I get an error message
when trying to access local host.
Do I need to change my Network Settings or something more sinister,
like my NetInfo settings?
Help please.
