There's a binary called "cvs" already on your mac. Period. As noted below,
it's both client and server. It doesn't generally run as a daemon - it's
invoked per CVS call, often by a SSH connection.
It's pretty important though to use the graphical front end, as others have
said. CVL.app (Concurrent Version Librarian) from sente.ch. As others have
noted, it has a few issues, but if you're nice to it it does a great job.
There are no doubt some java-based CVS clients out there too. Might be a good
opportunity to try some out...
I use CVS/CVL extensively on a number of projects, and it's absolutely
invaluable. I can revert back to old versions of code, reverse changes, do a
line by line analysis of who made what changes to what line, get a complete
change history per file etc etc etc. It's great for collaborative working -
also helps the developers to talk more.
As far as where the repository lives -- the cvs binary serves both as the
client and also as the server. So you can set up CVS on your local
workstation, or on another machine near or far. Find a good tutorial on the
