[NEWBIE] Adding files / targets...

Could someone please answer two very quick questions for me? I've done the
tutorials and I am now going through Ravi Mendis' book, but nothing yet
answers these.

QUESTION #1:
When adding files to a project, the developer is given a list of supplied
"targets" -- the project, the application server, and the web server.
Common sense would dictate, that that this affects where the files are both
stored and made available, but I would like a more detailed explanation.
Could someone please explain the difference between the three?

QUESTION #2:
When in ProjectBuilder, there are small checkboxes to the left of the file
names. At the top of this column is a "target" symbol, so, I assume these
checkboxes have something to do with the same issue in question #1. Could
someone please tell me how these checkboxes are used?

Thank you all, in advance. =)
