Are application variables shared between instances?

I am using a variable defined in the application class to keep track of the status of some things (eg how many people have accessed the database). I don't want to store trivial variables like this in a database.
If the application server creates multiple instances of the server part, would that variable be shared between all the instances, or would things get out of sync?
