OpenMap is a great mapping library in Java. It includes some free data
from other sources. The file openmap-4.5.4/share/data/cities.csv has
only 606 world cities. Download OpenMap from http://openmap.bbn.com/
% grep Norway cities.csv

If you want more data for USA, take a look at
http://openmap.bbn.com/data/citiesx020.csv.gz . The info seem to be
extracted from http://www.nationalatlas.gov/
If you want even more data; Take a look at http://www.nima.mil/ and
http://www.nima.mil/gns/html/index.html . "The GNS contains 3.90
million features with 5.37 million names" :)
