Ok. So we've all heard the bitching about Apple not letting people
know about future products and whether or not WO will be around in 5
years... or next year for that matter.
But here's why I stopped worrying and learned to love the 'bomb'...
WO/EOF is the app server I know and enjoy using. It does it for me
right now. I will eventually learn something else, but right now I
don't need to. The current release of WO is mostly bug free and works.
If Apple just killed WO right now it wouldn't matter, my license isn't
going to suddenly stop working. But I really don't think Apple is
going to just kill it off. It's being used too much in-house (iTMS,
Apple Store, .mac, etc.)
If you're worried about price... Panther will ship with 5.2 deployment.
It's most likely to stay that way until 10.4 or whatever. 10.2 kept
the WO5.1 bundled deployment as far as I know. So buy Panther and get
the free deployment licenses. If another version of WO comes out that
costs you money you'll most likely still get the free deployment
license again. So all you'll need to buy is a copy of WO for each
developer. And unless you have more servers than developers you
shouldn't have a problem.
Of course if you don't already have 5.2, then that's a little
different. And I might suggest to wait until a new version is
announced. Do you really need to upgrade to 5.2 today?

I have no news but many questions! It's very difficult to start new WO
project today because we have no information about the futur:
- when the next release will be launch?
- what about the next release?
- what about JBoss? (we want EOF no EJB!)
- what about Tomcat? (we want WOComponant and not JSP!)
- what about Cocoa (we want Cocoa frameworks and not JDK API as
Collection or Swing!)
- what about Java Client (kill swing, we want a java Cocoa!)
Think about financial manager and how you will justify the purchase,
for the same project, of two licenses per server for the same product!
"Yes, we started with 5.1, and we bought Panther (with 5.2, and so you
buy a developer version of WO as well), but just 2 weeks after,
because we didn't know when the next release was going to be launched,
we bought WO 5.3". My financial manager said me: "be careful! We are
not a startup!".
So, don't buy Panther Server now if you have WO and don't want to pay
a WO deployment license for each server! Wait the next release. But,
Jaguar Server had WO 5.1 and not 5.2... So, today, if you want to use
5.2, you have to buy Jaguar Server AND WO 5.2 per server. Perhaps it
will be similar with Panther?

bruahahaha:)
No, I don't have any specifics, but I would simply guess from that
there have been no updates for about 10 month that the next one will
not be a 0.0.x update and that 0.x or even more x.0 updates haven't
been free for a really long time, that you will need to buy new
licenses. Depending on what you have (thousands of appservers or
whatever) you will be well advised to talk to your apple sales guy
when the time arises...
Cheers, Anjo
