Another thing to point out perhaps, is that WOF + EOF is a very mature
(ripe?) toolkit. It has been battle tested on a grand scale in many
different fields. And even if the transition to pure Java could have
been smoother [1] (and is still mostly under way), the end result is
nonetheless very solid.
As far as commercial products goes, WebObjects is a great bargain no
matter how you look at it. Keep in mind that it was developed with
Fortune 500 in mind. WebObjects is not your "average" toolkit. It price
used to reflect that.
There are a couple of open source alternatives to WebObjects (Tapestry
[2] + Cayenne [3] comes to mind). But one way or another, you will
encounter the same "density" to paraphrase Colin.
