This is great. Thanks for the pointers. Here's the output:

java version "1.3.1"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1-root_1.3.1_021112-06:27)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.3.1_03-69, mixed mode)


So, Panther does not automatically update your system to 1.4.1.

How do you force such an update when software update doesn't list Java 1.4.1 as an option?
