Is EOModeler an important part, or is it easier for a beginner to start without it?

I'm a big fan of EOM so I would say yes. But there are WO developers that don't use it at
all. EOM/EOF are very nice frameworks for making sure of two things
1) One's data is saved
2) The data one saves is _correct_.

EOM/EOF makes it much much easier to deal with a normalized database. Why would you want
a normalized database? Because they are easier to upgrade and easier to keep up to date.

But a properly normalized relational database is a beast. Most people don't know enough to
do it right. And the people who do know how to do it right get tired of all the niggling
details you have to keep track of. EOM/EOF takes care of all that. (Our developers went
crazy with the need to write SQL even though they weren't very good at it :-).

As to making sure the data is correct you need to look at the validation papers on stepwise.
