Yes, Jonathan is right, you will need access to an SMTP server.  If you have
OS X Server, you should be able to switch on the mail server but you will
still have to configure it to send mail to a relay - it has to have some way
of passing it on.  Unless it sends mail directly to other servers, I haven't
used it so I'm not sure.  If your mail server behind the firewall is
configured to forward mail to a relay, then you should be able to use that
relay too (with the OS X mail server).  The easiest way of course is to open
a port on the firewall to give it access to the mail server behind it.  Is
there a reason why this is not already so?  Perhaps you are not permitted to
access and send mail via that server from outside the network?
