If you just need a quick primer on the Java language, Apple's Java for
WebObjects book might be sufficient. I'm not totally convinced it's
adequate for a lot of users. My sense was that it was designed to help
give Objective-C programmers a bootstrap on the Java language.
Not really -- it's intended to give any programmer with experience in
at least one other language just enough of a flavour of Java to be able
to get started with WebObjects. For most of the WebObjects
applications you write as a beginner you typically don't need to know
much Java beyond the basic syntax -- you generally also don't need
in-depth knowledge of the various libraries and packages that many
introductory Java books discuss. It doesn't pretend, however, to
replace those other references for those with a need for greater depth.
Given that it's freely available, and not exactly overpowering in
length or detail, I'd have thought it would make sense just to download
it and see if it serves your needs...
