Ryan,
Several people have sent me recommendations on FrontBase.
Unfortunately, after reviewing their site, and all of the outdated
information it contains, I am concerned with how current their products
are. None of the posts in either the Testimonials, News, or Press
Release areas are current. In fact, based on the site's info, the last
revision to FrontBase was back in late 2001.
Don't be discouraged by an outdated website. The product itself is fine
and really deserves your attention.
Anyone have additional info/insight on FrontBase? Are they keeping up
with the times? Making any enhancements? Dead in the water?
They are most definitely not dead. They may not have the super-fancy
GUI-Tools Openbase provides. However, their database server is not only
quite compact and fast but feature-wise also on par with many of the
larger players (full SQL 92 support, raw devices, stored procedures,
full-text index, backup, transaction logs, and many more pro features).
If you are on OS X, this is in fact the most advanced and solid db
money can buy (and quite affordable, too!).
Version 4 is very current (go and get it from the download area, they
support almost every OS you might want to use for a database server).
In the "BUY" section of their website, scroll down a bit and get the
free developer license. It activates all available features - just give
them your IP address or your MAC address and they will be happy to send
you a license number. Install the db and the WO plugin and you are
ready to go. The documentation of version 4 is available on the
website, too. There is also a developer mailing list.
The Frontbase people are very helpful and offer great and fast support
if you run into any issues.
Just check it out for yourself. I know of many large-scale deployments
of Frontbase that work with no problems at all. This company is alive
and well as far as the eye can see.
Ralph
