Maybe you're missing the WO 5.2.3 update. If Software Update doesn't offer it, you can manually download it from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/webobjectsdeveloper.html.

Well many of us are running 5.2.2 without these incidents, so I think only the 5.2.2 update is required to make the 5.2 developer package compatible with Panther and Java 1.4. Right?

I only say this because though 5.2.3 is a larger number, it is also a broken upgrade for people who intend to learn Java Client development.
