Advice on Project Approach - Single or Multiple Apps?

  • Subject: Advice on Project Approach - Single or Multiple Apps?

I am in the process of designing my first "comprehensive full website" with WO Technology. About 50 Enterprise Classes (so far) serving needs of sales blurb for potential customers thru to login for existing different customers and inhouse customer administration to manage, view and manipulate customer data.

I have a question on overall architecture approach. Which of these two approaches is viewed as the most flexible?

1) Build the whole thing as one complete single WebObjects application myself getting page elements and graphic bits and pieces from graphic design as required when constructing my WO HTML components, OR

2) Have graphic design build basic static HTML site for the "public" portion with sales blurb and provide a number of separate WO applications (all using the same EOModel/EOClasses framework) that are accessible via URLS from the main static site. The WO apps would be tailored to provide public dynamic data and private (requiring login) dynamic data.

Thinking out loud, option 1 will have advantage of one login, one session as a user navigates the site, particularly the private "customer-tailored" and customer accounts portion, so I don't have to worry about re-authenticating as the user moves from app to app.

Option 2 seems to have the advantage that I can get version 1 of the site up and running more quickly and incrementally add functionality more easily. We see this for example on the Apple website where there are different WO apps for various activities such as shopping in the store, using online .mac email, and .mac homepage manipulation. However in that case I have to come up with a scheme for keeping track of session data across different apps (which I have not done before).

Any advice from those who have done this one way or both ways is appreciated.

Thanks, Kieran
