I've tried to avoid this discussion, but I must step in and respond to
this posting. I don't believe that WebObjects is falling behind.
WebObjects is out in front of all of the other web development tools
I've seen. I am using WO 5.2.2 to develop servlets and we deploy under
JBoss on Solaris, but I've tested it on both Mac OS X and also under
Linux running Apache 2. It seems to work very well on all of these
platforms. In comparing with other tools (e.g. Oracle's application
server) WO is way ahead and updating is much easier (other groups using
OC4J are struggling to upgrade). When I initially started using
WebObjects IT was concerned that WebObjects would not be able to keep up
with new releases (e.g. Apache, Oracle DB, ...). In fact the reverse
has occured. I'm way ahead of the other groups in supporting the new
standards because I am using WebObjects.
I can't predict the future of WebObjects or any other product, but so
far it remains at the front. I develop on Mac OS X and don't really
care about development anywhere else. However, I do care that Apple
continues to support J2EE and each release continues to improve that
support. WO 5.2.2 was really very welcome and finally provides the J2EE
support we need. In my opinion WebObjects is moving in the right direction.
Yes, I would really prefer that Apple posts a roadmap of WebObjects well
in advance of major releases. And yes it was a struggle to figure out
how to configure JBoss, but quite honestly it was a JBoss documentation
failure not a WebObjects documentation failure. The WebObjects part was
the easiest part of the deployment process. So when I hear people
saying that WO is falling behind, I take issue with it. I think WO is
moving in the right direction with its J2EE support and if you aren't
seeing the progress it is probably due to the fact that you are not
moving along with the new features and direction of WebObjects. If you
want to deploy your WebObjects applications on Linux using Apache 2 and
J2EE it is trivial. I've done it. Just move to the new "true war"
servlet support in WebObjects 5.2.2. You don't even need to install
WebObjects on the deployment server. You just need a license for your
deployment, and might I remind you that Apple offers very competitive
and generous licensing terms for such a high quality product.
my two cents,
-tom
Yes, Apple marketing needs to do a much better job for the sake of all
of using WebObjects.
