Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I've done the self-hosting thing
for too long on a M$ platform. I'd rather find an inexpensive host and
pay them. While this type of thing may be fun for most, I'd rather
spend my time on other tasks.
Nothing personal. It's a great example for someone that's trying to
learn the hosting or IP-related aspects. For me, however, I'm more
focused on the actual coding and want nothing to do with hosting rather
than opening up an FTP client from time to time.
Thanx,
Ryan

So, buy a cheap 1GHz eMac for $799. (or if you have a little more, buy
the cheapest multilicense XServe G4 for $2,499 which comes bundled
with OS X Server (worth $999) and WebObjects deployment license (worth
$699)). Stick lots of RAM in it (< $150). If you already own
WebObjects ($699), install the Deployment installation and license on
the Mac. Also install your database server (www.MySQL.com is free for
example, that's item 1 taken care of).
Use cloaking feature of www.dyndns.org to point to different WO
applications so you can have different "domains" (item 2)
Mac OS X Server has FTP services built in. If using client, just use
unix open source FTP server. (item 3)
For item 4 use postfix and/or javamail to haev WO app send emails.
Get cable modem internet service at your house. Typically Roadrunner
basic cable modem service costs $40 a month (from TIme Warner in my
area).
If your service does not provide a fixed IP address, then use
www.dyndns.org and a free program such as DNSUpdate running on your
eMac to automatically update the domain name to reflect your current
IP address.
Then host your own semi-pro/personal WO app on your own eMac. If
anything you will learn more by hosting it yourself inexpensively in
your house!

A week or so ago I posted a message looking for semi-pro hosting. A
friend has asked me to help him find inexpensive PERSONAL hosting so
he may learn web objects.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must allow database access so he may learn this area;
2. Must allow multiple sites and multiple domains at little or no
additional cost;
3. Must have easy upload facilities (using FTP or something similar);
and,
4. Must allow outgoing email from his sites (so people can send him
requests through forms).
I have tried finding a few, but the ones I have found through Google
are much too expensive for him. The ones in his price range do not
offer all of the requirements he needs to fill.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx,
Ryan
