As you can see from the WWDC keynote, Automator basically allows one to construct a UI around an existing or new Applescript API thereby making it accessible to the masses.

I agree that Apple often hides its technology for years before really doing anything with it - look at the whole basis of MacOS X itself which is essentially NeXT Step.

I think that the fact that MacOS X is now 'cool' is a great thing. Apple is getting a foothold in the Enterprise and that can only be a good thing. As people take Apple more seriously in the Enterprise market I believe that they will take Apple's Enterprise Tools more seriously too...and WO is basically that tool.

Just being devils advocate, I'd like to point out AppleScript. It's an Apple only technology that has a thriving base of users and is not available nor will it likely ever be available on any other platform and it's doing quite well. It went through a terrible period of neglect much like WO but it eventually was turned around and it looks like Automator or whatever it's called is just an extension of that good feeding. Maybe after this long period of neglect, WO will have a similar turn around.

I actually find that people are discovering WO by finding out about
Apple technology first.

And that is the whole, entire problem with them not marketing it. If only
Apostles of Apple know about WO then it is a dead technology.
