The power of D2* WebObjects!

Howdy All,

You've probably heard about the findings that there is something like a 1:20 difference in quality and output between the worst and best developers [1].

One of the things I have realised in working with the DirectTo* technologies [2] is that there are developers out there that can push this range to 1:50! I'm continually in awe of these folks and I am sure that the smart companies (ones not driven by buzz-words) are getting great competitive advantage from what they can do [3].

Further, these technologies are, like WO itself was originally, way ahead of their time but do show that WO does have a lot more to offer and is still leading the pack. Of course, as people have said many times, these (D2* technologies) are the best kept secrets of the best kept secret (WebObjects).

I find these technologies [3] a good way to introduce WO to organisations - they are great to demo. The management and developers I present to are are amazed at this stuff, and this motivates them to consider the rest of WO in further detail. Perhaps we need to make these technologies higher profile?

Cheers,
Ashley.

[1] Unfortunately for the best developers there doesn't seem to be that variation in compensation. Probably due to the fact that a lot of the developers who think they are top of the range are really not.

[2] DirectToWeb, DirectToJavaClient, DirectToWebServices

[3] The downside is that it is harder to find these talented developers. So a lot of companies end up employing a greater number of "cheaper" developers. The result is often bad as these technologies need developers who really know their stuff.

[4] One should also mention the client-side (partitioned) business objects that EOF provides for Java Client (n-tier) applications. Again, this is a leading technology that I don't believe most organisations realise they need as yet.
