Unisys U.S. LZW Patent No. 4,558,302 expired on June 20, 2003, the
counterpart patents in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy
expired on June 18, 2004, the Japanese counterpart patents expired on
June 20, 2004 and the counterpart Canadian patent expired on July 7,
2004.

Does anybody know what the status is regarding writing out GIF's from
an application (eg: a WOA)? Compuserve has held a patent over the
modified LZW algorithm for some time. I hear it's expired on the 7th
July, but there's no talk of it having expired?
[PS: I know about writing PNGs -- it's just not always what's required
unfortunately]
