Hi Janine,

If you just need a quick primer on the Java language, Apple's Java for WebObjects book might be sufficient. I'm not totally convinced it's adequate for a lot of users. My sense was that it was designed to help give Objective-C programmers a bootstrap on the Java language.

WebObjects makes heavy use of a number of object-oriented design patterns that take some time to get your head around if you don't come from a Smalltalk/Obj-C/Java background. As a result, I often recommend that new Java programmers start with Jacquie Barker's "Beginning Java Objects" book, which provides a firm overview of OO design, not just Java language syntax. If you're coming from a C++ background, some of this material will be very familiar, but it might provide a good refresher nonetheless.

Would I be better off reading Apple's various Java docs, starting with Java for WebObjects Developers, or a more generic Java tutorial like the one from Sun? I imagine the latter would be better and more up-to-date, but that the former would be more helpful in learning the WO Way. Thoughts?

thanks,

janine
