Tom,
I pretty much gave up on Xcode's integrated CVS. I prefer using a free
CVS GUI application call CVL.
You can get it at the following address if interested:

I know others on this site rely on this tool as well. It seems to be
much more flexible and easier to use than either Xcode SCM or the
terminal.

I'm using XCode 1.2 and use the CVS feature for my WebObjects project.
The update feature seems to work fine for existing files, but it
doesn't seem to download files that are in CVS but not in my working
directory (e.g. files that others have checked into CVS). I see
these files in the SCM window with a "U" next to such files, but it
isn't clear how to download the file. The only way I seem to get
these files is to type "cvs update -dP" in a terminal window and then
manually add the new files to my project. Clearly I must be doing
something wrong since XCode must support downloading new files from
the repository. Any ideas?
thanks,
-tom
