Justin,

I can understand why people go Oracle, .NET, (insert
your expensive license, expensive training, software name here) its so
they're marketable after the job is done.
I've flirted with WebObjects for years, hoping that my foresight at
seeing an incredible tool before the curve would put me in a position
to capitalize on a trend. Have you seen any ads lately? Degree, three
years of .NET experience and you get $30k. Excuse me? I have four kids.
I'll work for free to prove my worth before I'll work that cheap.

Amen. I think a lot of us can feel your pain. Your story illustrates exactly why I am so frustrated with Apple. We all flirted with WebObjects because we recognized something special. WebObjects developers should be the highly-paid elite (believe it or not, they once were); instead we are the anonymous fringe.

No, it seems I'm drawn to all the wrong choices and I'm on my way into a major career change. But that is an entirely separate issue from WebObjects.

Here I'll disagree with you. I think this is THE pivotal issue facing WebObjects and all of us on this list today. Learning WebObjects should never have become one of "the wrong choices" for a career, yet in many ways it has. Not your fault at all.

Fact. WebObjects isn't going anywhere. Apple uses it and that is enough to guarantee it will be here long term.

Forgive me for turning your words, but I have to say it a different way. It is becoming apparent that "WebObjects isn't going anywhere." Apple using it internally will never provide enough momentum or recognition to make WebObjects an accepted technology in the general IT population.

Fact. WebObjects is progressing even if you think Apple isn't
progressing it.
Fact. WebObjects tools are getting updated even if on a lower priority
than other technologies at Apple. Get over it.

All true, but the tools are the least of WebObjects' problems. They are the best out there.

Fact. WebObjects is still the best there is in critical categories and
in this increasingly malware-ridden world it is an oasis.

And NOBODY knows it.

It looks like I'll be driving a big rig soon so don't take this like a pie in the sky dream.

Justin, good luck with everything. Unfortunately, I think the WO community will be losing a lot more good people like yourself in the not-so-distant future.

Sincere regards,
Trae
