OK,  I found the problem.

WebObjects 5, JavaClient Desktop Applications, page 163 under the rubric "Initial Values" clearly states "Add this code in the server-side Student.java file".

So I added my awakeFromInsertion() into my server-side object and got no joy. Moving the routine to the client side and bingo - works like a hose!

Pierre Bernard have me the hint.  Thanks Pierre!
