On the client side of a direct-to-java-client in a EO I invoke a remote method to the EO's class on the server side. The invocation is stimulated by an action tied to a custom button on the user interface. My understanding is the editing context is sloshed over to the server side, where I make modifications to the EC. Upon return, the EC has been modified but the client side form window doesn't think there are changes and therefore doesn't activate the "save" button.

The client-side symptoms you describe seem to be very similar to those I experience when using a Many-to-Many join entity with an exposed class attribute. I wrote about it yesterday to this list. My problem does not involve anything custom (controller or model) and shows up even when the entities are classed as EOGenericRecord.

I mention this only because I am having a hard time understanding even how to describe my problem, and you describe your problem quite clearly. I'm going to review my own problem in terms of the state of the EC for these join entities. Maybe I'm just talking to myself, but thanks for sharing your problem in such clear terms.
