Ryan,
We are currently running Oracle 8i on Sun hardware. Because we have been
in a major development phase for the past four years, we have not moved
off 8i.
Early on in our development cycle, some of the staff used OpenBase to
develop, but once we had our first Oracle-based production release we all
switched to using a development schema that mirrored our production, both
running on Oracle 8i. The reason being that it removed any
inconsistencies between developer's local db's and the main production
version. However, this is less because Oracle is better for developers
and more to maintain consistency across the development staff.
Now that it is official that 10g will be fully supported on G5 xServes
<http://seminars.apple.com/tours/oracle>, I am budgeting for, and
planning to move our 8i implementation on solaris first up to 10g on
solaris, then later this year we will start migrating our Oracle 10g
database hardware to xServe G5 with ultimate goal of replacing all of our
Sun hardware with Apple server hardware--it is just so much easier to
maintain and support than the Sun hardware, not to mention cheeper.
