Yeah, the XCode 1.5 update is not done through Mac OS X Software
updates. It is a manual update. This caught me a few months ago when
I realized I was using XCode 1.1! Ugh...
Anyhow, you can get the latest XCode at:

Sounds like you have some configuration that is not compatible and
need to update part of it. The other possibility is that something
just didn't install properly, in which case a reinstall should fix
that.
