I'd like to emphasize certain points that Jerry made that most (I'd say 80-90%) developers overlook.

Many developers seem to believe that denormalization gets one performance at little to no cost. On the contrary, denormalization can be _very_ expensive in terms of the amount of effort one needs to apply in order to preserve data integrity. Codd, Date and others explain this point very well.


My rule was only to denormalize when the DBA told me he ran out of tuning tricks to increase performance. Offhand I can't remember any time he did so. :-)
