We are building a WebObjects Application without DisplayGroups.

It's dead easy to just create a display group programmatically and set its object array to an array of objects that you've already fetched. Then you can next and previous record to your heart's content. You can use WOBatchNavigationBar from WOExtensions to quickly build a navigation UI.
