Thanks Chuck,

I decided to go with the BLOB field in a separate table for the short term and figure out all the elements necessary to implement Lucene in the long term. I can fully list the 17,000 documents again (just in case ;-) ) and I can search and do everything else necessary even though the content is in a separate table. It was far far easier than I expected. Thanks for your suggestions and help everyone.
