Hi all,
A couple of months ago we purchased several new dual 1.8 Ghz G5 and 15"
PowerBook systems for our office. All of the machines have been running
smoothly except for mine.
On the G5 I see a system wide UI hang about once a day. I can move the
mouse, but can't click on anything and the keyboard is locked out. I can
SSH into the machine, but after examining a few processes and logs,
nothing jumps out as the cause. The hang doesn't seem to be application
specific. I've seen it in several applications, including Safari,
CodeWarrior and Eclipse. I've run the hardware test and no problems show
up. And I've tried removing all third party start up software. The hang
still happens.
On the PowerBook I see a problem waking from sleep where I'm asked for
my password, then the screen goes blank. I can move the mouse and the
back light is on, but the screen is just a mass of black pixels. If I
press the power button followed by the the return key, the machine goes
through the normal shut down process (as you'd expect as long as there
are no open changed documents). At the end just before the shut down,
the desktop makes a brief appearance.
I was just to the point were I was going to contact Apple support when
one of the other new G5's started exhibiting the UI hang. The only
change on that system was that the developer had installed and was
running Eclipse 3.0. That set off an alarm bell in my head because in
every case where I've seen these problems, I've had Eclipse running.
As an experiment, we took one of our new G5's and installed Eclipse to
see what would happen. This machine's hardware is identical to the
others. And up till the installation of Eclipse it had been working
perfectly without a single hiccup. The developer installed Eclipse and
had it running in the background while using Xcode and other
applications. After about a day and a half, he saw the same wake from
sleep blank screen problem that I've seen on the PowerBook.
So while I realize that this is not hard evidence, it certainly feels
like running Eclipse is precipitating these problems. Maybe there's some
general Mac OS X Java VM problem with SWT applications. Note that all of
these machines also have Xcode 1.5 and WO developer 5.2.3 installed with
the latest Java VM 1.4.2_05-141 and all of Apple's software updates.
For now I've reported a bug to both the Eclipse group and Apple. But I
know how tough it is to deal with these kind of random, difficult to
reproduce problems.
The question for this group is have any of you seen the kinds of
problems that we're seeing while Eclipse is running? If so, I'd be
interested in what your hardware configuration is or any other details.
Please feel free to write to me directly.
Best regards,
