Clive,
That is entirely possible. I believe that all the WO stuff now runs as "appserver" You may need to give "appserver" permission on those directories.

thanks Robert, I checked the fonts and discovered differences between the two machines, but the necessary font is in place on both. However, I now feel the problem may be to do with file access permissions!
I discovered that if I access the application using a head on the server (logged in as administrator and accessed the application via a browser from Monitor), the JPEGs are created correctly and the bold strings are visible after editing.
If I try the same access from the local network, the failure occurs i.e. I do not see JPEGs with bold strings.
Monitor is running from "root" on the server, and I wonder if it was running as "appserver" would this make any difference? I had difficulties using "appserver" back in 5.2.2 days and hence have stayed with root, but maybe this is wrong!
Puzzling! Any thoughts gratefully received.

Clive,
Have you checked the "Fonts" folders on the server to make sure you have the "bold" variant of the font you are using installed?
There are several "Fonts" folders if these are Mac OS X machines:
/System/Library/Fonts
/Library/Fonts
~/Library/Fonts
It is also possible for fonts to be installed in other folders in the system. This typically happens when particular fonts are installed by specific applications (Photoshop & Illustrator come to mind):
~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts

I have an application that enables users to edit the strings in svg files, then to generate a JPEG from the svg and display the jpeg. (I use the Batik libraries to create a JPEG Transcoder.) Some of the svg strings use bold font, while others are regular.
On my development machine running Mac OS X (10.3.8) the JPEG shows the strings correctly, showing bold as necessary and regular otherwise.
On the deployment machine, Mac OS X Server(10.3.6), the JPEGs show all text as regular, losing the bold!
has anybody any similar experience, or any idea why the bold is being lost?
