A quick look at the parameters for the Application Server in Work Group
manager shows that the value for NFSHomeDirecotry is/var/empty. For a
standard user that value would be something like /Users/rns3. Perhaps you
could use Workgroup Manager to set up a real home directory for the
Application Server (appserver) user. Remember that you will need to
change your preferences in Workgroup Manager to "show system users and
groups" in order to edit this user.
For reference, I am looking at the appserver user on one of my "headless"
G5 Cluster Node WO servers running 10.3.8. Though "headless" does not
mean that I cannot create a graphical login session. ARD or VNC allow you
to remotely login to these "headless" OS X servers via the standard aqua
GUI session.
