WebObjects is rather heavy duty and over-engineered in many case. Have you considered using something more lightweight beside PHP? I heard good things about Ruby on Rails for example:

One way or another, regarding login, have you considered using plain, old, standard, HTTP Authentication instead of "rolling your own"?
