having just seen the dialogue on this question, it seems the main message
(buy-in the shopping basket!) has been made, however maybe I can add:

a) if you have not had much experience of programming (forgive me if I've
read that wrongly), your issues appear to be:
Object Oriented programming, database designs, multi-tier systems.

PA provided a good list of references for OO systems, but why not also do a
google search for "smalltalk xerox" and check out what Steve Jobs says in
http://www.smalltalk.org/alankay.html ( I programmed Smalltalk throughout
the 1980's and 90's and recommend you take a look).

As far as database design and multi-tier systems, perhaps that's why you are
interested in WO but maybe you might like to see papers on object-relational
mappings, and I think the following provides some food for thought
http://www.agiledata.org/essays/impedanceMismatch.html

b) to overcome your "getting started with java" anxiety, why not get some
help to do what you want and maybe work with someone to achieve your first
Java / WO project, after all there are a number of proven quality experts
on this mail group!

hope this is helpful
Clive Roberts
