I open with window 1 window 2 as a popup. now I would like the window 1 closed after popup window 2 is opened!!

My understanding is that you can't close a window reliably with JavaScript unless you opened that window earlier using JavaScript. If you try it anyways, with Safari it only seems to work when that window doesn't have any history, IE on the mac always closes the window, and IE on Windows prompts the user to confirm the closing.
