I have no reason whatever to think that Apple will ever opensource wo, and every reason to think that would be the only thing that could save it from oblivion.

I will say, though, that the words "always" and "never" have come too easily from the mouths of Apple/NeXT people since the early days. In reality they have regularly changed tack when it seemed like the thing to do.
