Fyi,
I would take this with a grain of salt coming from a rumor site, but it definitely seems intriguing:
I personally think opensourcing WebObjects could really benefit Apple and WebObjects long term. It could also do a lot to unify a lot of the community projects going on like WOProject and Project Wonder. Currently, there is a serious void for something right now like WebObjects(HTML Applications, Java Client Applications, Direct To Suff, Enterprise Objects, etc.). The J2EE is too complex and expensive, .NET is too controlled by MS, and the Hypernate/Tapestry still aren't as complete as WO. The other options of Perl, Python, and/or PHP do not seem nearly as elegant solutions...
It seems that the only thing really holding WebObjects back is Apple (too much control, too little marketing)... and this from an Apple diehard. Sure they might lose some hardware sales other development and deployment, but the goodwill, developer contributions, and overall growth of the product would more than make up for it.
Anyway.. just my 2 cents,
- David
