The benefit is indirect sales of Xserves and computers for developers who want to deploy and/or develop on OS X.
But from a business perspective, what good is the growth of a product if you are giving it away for free unless there is some other benefit (like giving away a client in order to sell a server)? Don't expect goodwill is incentive enough.
