We have good results with both UJAC and apache FOP.
ujac : http://ujac.sf.net
xsl-fo / fop : http://xml.apache.org/fop/
We looked at ujac for the easy integration with barcode, found a syntax
is similar to-xsl-fo, but with built-in syntax for basic graphics
primitives and better control over the absolute layout (rotating
textes, etc.).
Most of our report are built around fop (basic listing business
report), just to keep close to standard, but we keep ujac around for
the layout fancy case.
I know of a cie using pdflatex as their rendering engine (wo
component generating a tex/latex document).
