There are rarely any apples-to-apples comparisons when it comes
to similar technologies. I'm finding myself being drawn into the
"...let's not start doing this in WO/Java, we need to get on board
with .NET..." debate (on the side of sticking with WO).
As the retained consultant for one account in particular I'm being
directly challenged as to my knowledge of what .NET "is" and why
we're not rushing to get on the band wagon.
The answer's easy: .Net is bound to MS Windows. Would you ever
consider having the thing on your server?
Not exactly.
The .NET CLR is bound to MS Windows, but producing a .NET assembly
(if done according to the ECMA standard) leaves you free to use any
CLR (Common Language Runtime), including .NET and Mono.
Mono is Ximian's implementation, now under Novell's wing, and it
supports Mac OS X, among other environments.
There may well be more CLR implementations over time.
The CLR is similar to the JVM/JRE, in many ways.
This Wikipedia article has some useful info, though it does seem
like marketing-speak in some ways --

Anyway, you may want to check this:

*Disclaimer*: the .Net and J2EE information is based on what I've
*heard from others*, not what I checked myself. So, it may be wrong
without me knowing.
I don't have any real apples-to-apples comparison testing for you, but
from what I've seen, each environment has its strengths and weaknesses.
Neither is a panacea.
Be seeing you,
Ted
