You might be hitting a known Tiger bug, but I have 2 questions:
1. Is this a PPP (modem) connection, or TCP/IP (Ethernet)?
2. Try "ping kermac.local" while your network connection is down, then again
when your connection is up. Does the ping fail with the connection up?
If you answered "PPP" and "yes", please let me know. The workaround for now
is to make a second (non-primary) network connection, perhaps to an AirPort
network or an Ethernet LAN. Otherwise if PPP is the only defined network
interface, you might hit this bug.
