Bingo, it seems JVM 1.3 was installed under the Oracle
program group and windows was forcibly loading from
there. Removed and replaced with a windows jvm from
www.java.com and things are running (with some kinks,
but much more acceptable). Thanks to Chuck for
helping me pinpoint this one.
