What are wod bindings like "height = ^height; " '^' ?

In
some component examples I see:
height = ^height;
and in the *.wod file, and nowhere in any documentation have I seen
what the caret means, or any discussion of it. Is it some inheritance
thing?

PS: Do some characters in the subject line, or at the beginning, cause
