From what I see (and how I understand), this is not a vain intellectual
exercise ...
If you think of the content as a sub-view of it's parent wrapper : use
woswitchcomponent.
If you think of the wrapper as a decoration around the content : use
wrapper technique with wocomponentcontent.
Most skin-alike component should fall into the decoration pattern.
Most view -->> possible sub-views relationship should fall in the
woswitch pattern.

OK -- for this new project I have been convinced and will go back to
WOComponentContent method. It was a brief intellectually failed
exercise.

This model work great when the wrapper is mostly static, or doesn't

For these things, there is Wonder's ERXWOTemplate and
ERXWOComponentContent. It kind of makes your head explode when you
use it first, but with these you can have multiple component
contents in your wrapper that get filled out by designated areas in
the "real" page.
That's awesome! You're going to move me to being a Wonder user yet,
Anjo.
I actually downloaded the latest version and started looking through
the code. Haven't gotten far yet; work related tasks consume so much
of my free time. :-)
In the same vein, if one is going to take the time and trouble to
learn and integrate the Wonder frameworks, they might also take a
look at the WireHose frameworks in which skinning can be done
completely auto-magically.
Gary Teter has done an incredible job dealing with the issues of
creating web portals. On the other hand, Wonder is free and WireHose
is proprietary, but the latter comes with documentation and awesome
tech support.

Jerry
