Hi Chuck (et al.),
I think it is pretty clear what Web 2.0 is - from a user's
perspective it's about more desktop-like Web applications, and from a
developer's perspective it's about building Web applications that
integrate with other services (i.e. distributed applications). But,
of course, people may disagree.
The "classic" example is integrating an app with Google Maps to
provide information on the location of houses for sale etc. The
presentation is more graphical and dynamic (than, e.g. giving a list
of houses) and the application is built by integrating Google Maps
with another data set and logic.
As for this being a move to resources-oriented programming, I am not
so sure about that. Sure resources have a fixed minimal protocol,
but then you need to know the location of the resource (it's URI) and
how to interpret the data (e.g. the XML) therein.
For me, it's more about the move to Service Oriented Architecture
(yes, the term most people think is just another buzz-word). And
services (like SOAP Web services) are facades that provide a larger
scale abstraction than business objects. A service has its "methods"
just like an object.
Just my take.
Cheers,
Ashley.
