I don't think I've ever tried using it with a context that was
secure, but I would THINK it would be OK.

How are sending that e-mail? It sounds like you are sending a
component based e-mail and using the current context() instead of
creating a new one. That will mess up the current context, leading
to various sorts of oddness.
