All hotels say to not leave expensive items in the room, even the
expensive fancy hotels. This is just to limit their liability in the
event of theft. America is full of lawyers and you will see signs of
this everywhere. The change of someone breaking in to your room and
stealing stuff is very small indeed. There is a slightly higher
chance of the maid stealing stuff when she makes up the room, but we
are still talking 1 in 1000 at worst. Your wife need have no fear of
walking in the streets alone in the daytime. People might ask her
for spare change (OK, people will ask her for spare change) but they
are not aggressive. She won't see anything worse than what she can
see at home.

Hi All,
Thanks Lucas for your suggestions.
I'm staying in Hilton right across the street to Mark Twain.
some one here on the list said not to leave any expensive items in
the room.
Is it really that bad, even rooms are not secured?. I'm little
concerned because I'm bringing my wife with me and she will be
staying in the
Hotel room all day while I'm at conference. She is pretty new to
America.
She wanted to walk on the streets alone to look around the city
(Which is out of question after seeing this thread).
Do I need to consider changing the hotel?. Any suggestions
Thanks,

Thanks a lot, Lucas. I knew it couldn't be that bad. Coming from
Boston and Manhattan before that, I find San Francisco odd in the
way you can go one or two blocks and suddenly be in a "bad"
neighborhood but I've never had trouble in San Francisco.

Hi all,
This thread reminds me of one of my favorite Yoda quotes:

I live in the Terndeloin -- on O'Farrell between Hyde and
Levenworth. I
can give you all some practical advice:
Stay off Ellis from Mason going Westward (and all streets between
Market and Ellis*). That means, if you are staying at the Mark
Twain,
the best route from Moscone is to walk up to Market, cross Market to
Stockton (you all know that street, it is the street the Apple
Store is
on), and then take O'Farrell to Taylor (where the Mark Twain is).
Basically, you always want the Union Square area to be your pivot
point.
Walk East/West on O'Farrell, Geary, Post, Sutter, etc., and then
North/South on Mason, Powell, Stockton.
If you look at a map you will say to yourself, "Oh, I can just
walk down
Taylor to Market street and then over to 4th." Don't do this.
Just walk
down O'Farrell to Stockton, and then across Market to 4th.

* This generally applies to the nighttime, but I don't walk in
that area
even in the day because I don't want to deal with drama. I can
handle
people asking me for money, but I'd never want to get in the
middle of
someone else's problems/drama. And there is a lot of it in that
part of
town.
Well, I'm coming from Turkey for WWDC, and I've also booked in
Mark Twain.
So hope it will be fine (at least not worse than Istanbul).. It
seems just
a
mile from Moscone (from Google Maps), so it'll be OK to walk in
a pleasant
day. If not, a 4$ ride is always welcome (if you'd like to share
the cab,
please don't hesitate to contact me :) )
Thank you for all the info you shared.
See you all there;

It's really not that bad.
The Tenderloin is kind of a surprise if you've been wandering
around
the tourist destinations in SF. It's not a pleasant place --
dirty,
run down, lots of people you'd rather not do business with. If
you have
been in major cities in the U.S. you know not to flash your wallet
around and to ignore people who approach you on the street.
The one thing I do caution people visiting SF about is that,
while it
often seems genteel and picturesque (especially in the summer
when the
weather is nice), it's crime rate, as far as I know, is pretty
much the
same as that of any other major U.S. city. So you want to watch
your
bag, keep your wallet in a safe pocket, don't leave anything very
expensive in your hotel room, and think defensively.

Oh man, is it really so bad that you should be in a cab? I'm
staying
at 610 Geary (Geary and Leavonworth) which looks to be just
inside the
Tenderloin. Last year, I stayed over at 7th and Howard and
didn't have
any trouble. I found this
(http://www.sfgate.com/traveler/guide/sf/neighborhoods/

neighborhood. I was
planning on walking around.

Hang on a minute... I was confusing the Mark Twain with the Mark
Hopkins. The Mark Twain is at O'farrel and Taylor
which is in the Tenderloin. But it's probably only a $4 cab

from Moscone.

Some reviews say it's crap, some say it's good. I guess
it's good
enough for me, but I got worried about one review, that says
it's a
bad location of SF. For you guys who know SF, how bad is it?
I don't
mind about prostitution and stuff, but is it OK to carry my
bag with
the powerbook every WWDC day (specially the meet-up day,
that ends
by 10pm)?
