I think that it mainly depends on what web apps you want to create.
If you need to customize or add functionalities to applications that
might already exist as open source projects (e-commerce, forum,
Content Management System etc), you are probably better off with PHP,
or JSP. There is much less open source, ready-to-use code available
for WebObjects.
On the other hand if you need to create something original, something
that does not exist as an open source project yet, WebObjects might
be exactly what you want, because of its flexibility and good design.
And the community, being relatively small, can't afford treating
newcomers badly. You would receive very good support from the mailing
lists.
Perhaps we could give you better advices if you were telling us what
kind of web app you plan to write.

Hi,
I am researching WO for use in an upcoming project.
Since I am new to this list, I do not have a feel for what is going
on with WO or the WO Community.
I would love to hear Good/Bad comments concerning the WO Development
Environment. Any comparison to Ruby on Rails would be helpful, as
well.
I might also point out that I am new to Object-Based Programming,
thus, I will need to devote substantial time acquiring the needed
skills. That is why I ask about the State of WebObjects... is it
worth investing one's valuable time or has it been superceded by new,
improved technologies?
Thanks for any comments.
Scott
