The WOBuilder and EOModeler that come with the Windows
deployment of 5.2.x work well enough to get by, at least for me. They certainly
have their quirks and bugs, but I've learned to do the things I need without
running into those, and they're not much worse than the existing tools
for the Mac.
For those starting with 5.3.x who don't have the Windows-based
WOBuilder and EOModeler, there are some options. First, WOLips does include
some WOBuilder functionality, though it's not drag & drop but instead
text-based editing with autocompletion and validation. It's not done, and
has it's own quirks for now, but should improve and be a decent alternative
to WOBuilder (a few already prefer it).
For EOModeler, you'll either have to use a Mac, or
learn to edit the *.plist and index.eomodeld files by hand (which I understand
can be unforgiving). There is a cross-platform tool called CayenneModeler
in the open-source Cayenne project that can read EOModeler files, but it
cannot write them, so that may be a future option if someone can put some
time and effort into that project.
